Abstract

In Die Sache selbst (PhG, pp. 333 ff.), Hegel expounds the claim of a rational individual according to which he can express his own "nature in acting" (Siep, 2015, p. 161). This is understood by the individual in terms of its fidelity to a mental state internal to the agent; this position has been called "compatibilism" (Pippin, 2008, p. 148). However, Hegel argues that the cause of such action cannot be truly faithful to its nature unless the individual is aware of its social context.
