The present article exposes the circumstances in which an abruptchange in the succession which took place during the reign of Andronikos IIPalaiologos (1282-1328), who in the year 1321, after the decease of his eldest sonand heir Michael IX (1320), excluded from the imperial succession the latter's son,Andronikos III, putting in his place his second son, Constantine, and above all thelatter's bastard, Michael Katharos, a situation that would be the preamble to the FirstCivil War between the Palaiologoi.
