The aim of this article is to reflect upon the complications which thehistorians have faced when trying to characterize Manichaeism. In the first place, wewill identify, as an example of this, different characterizations that have been madethroughout history. In the second place, we will propose a possible solution whichavoids the attempt of confering an exclusive identity and which incorporates thetemporal and regional differences of the Manichaean religious tradition.
